Short term causes
One of the main short term causes was completely unnecessary wars that Louis XVI was participating in. This resulted in the country lacking money. With the country lacking money, the first thought that came to Louis' mind was to increase the taxing on the citizens, which is exactly what he did. The taxes kept rising and rising until the peasants and workers could barely buy themselves enough food to survive. While the peasants were dying of hunger and diseases, the upper classes were busy spending all the money that they had collected from taxing the peasants to buy themselves unnecessary luxuries such a jewels and clothes. This resulted in an uproar
Another reason would be the great fear, where there was a huge drought and famine spread everywhere during 1787-1788. Woman would march to the king's palace as one and order for food and water to be given to the peasants while the males went to the fields and worked as much as they can so that they are able to pay the taxes that were demanded and still be able to buy food to support their family. Thousands were sick, thirsty, hungry, or all three, and some even died from the hunger and diseases.
